Audio Microtrack

how do I pick up ambience noise with relatively cheap equipment?
I have a Microtrack 24/96 by M-audio with a few cheap microphones, what sort of setup (on a budget) would be the best to pick up the ambience of a relatively quiet/isolated location?
Such as outside or where the ambience of a room is increadibly quiet.
I once used the cheap microphones and covered or muffled them with a soft piece of cloth and it worked. Or are you looking for something a bit noisier?
