How To Mount A Tv On The Wall – Part Two – First Steps
Hopefully you will have read through Part One of this guide to how to mount a TV on the wall, and will be fully prepared to start to take the first few steps to get your TV onto its LCD wall bracket. So without further ado, let’s get started.
What to do with your cables
This might be a question that you have already raised; in mounting a television to the wall how do you run the power cable to it, not to mention the cables to any other appliances? Well essentially you will be faced with three choices:
- You could drill a hole into your wall large enough to fit all of your cables through, running them down the wall cavity to the bottom where another hole would release them. This, in some ways, is the ideal solution because your cables will be completely masked from the world. However, once your TV is in place you will find it difficult to run any additional cables to it. This should also not be attempted by DIY novices.
- An alternative would be simply to run your cables down the wall, and to encase them in molding. It’s not quite as subtle, but then the molding could be painted or decorated to match the rest of the room, helping it to blend in. It’s easier than actually drilling into the wall and will still hide your cables from sight, but will still take a bit of work to achieve.
- Finally you could simply run your cables along any pre-existing features of your room like a dado rail. This is by far the simplest solution as it doesn’t involve any DIY work, short of installing some cable clips to keep the cables tidy. This solution would work well with a floating shelf system for your appliances located just below or next to the TV wall bracket itself as then the only cable required would be for power.
There are pros and cons with each of these cabling solutions when considering how to mount a TV on the wall. You will need to make your decision early though, as the first two methods will involve doing some work before the mounting process can commence.
Mark the location where your LCD wall bracket is to rest
You should already have given some thought as to the ideal location for your LCD wall bracket, so now it’s time to mark the location on the wall. If you are using a plasterboard wall, your first step will be to find the studs located behind it using your pipe and stud detector to ensure that your wall mount will be fastened correctly.
Small brackets can often be fastened using just one stud, but larger TVs will require the use of two. Put a small pencil mark on the wall where you have located the relevant studs to help with the alignment of your television bracket. Now pick up the bracket itself and align it against the stud, or studs, that you will be using. Preferably have a friend hold the bracket while you mark the locations where the screws will need to be secured into the wall. Be sure to get your spirit level out to make sure things are as straight as can be.
Prep your LCD or Plasma television set
Your LCD wall bracket will be split into two distinct sections. The section that attaches to the wall and the section that attaches to the television. We’ll attach the television section first as, once in place, you will be able to hold it against the markings that you have already made on the wall to ensure that the height and position is as it should be.
If your TV is already fixed to a stand your first job will be to take your screwdriver, remove the four screws holding it in place, and carefully detach the stand from the TV. Then you will simply need to screw in the appropriate section of the bracket (as detailed in the instruction manual) with the screws provided with the mount itself. You might need to try out a few different sizes before finding the appropriate one, as brackets include fixings for many different models of TV.
By this point you should have given some consideration to your cables and taken steps if necessary, have marked the position for your bracket on your wall and have attached the TV part of the LCD wall bracket to the TV itself.
